LSR Injection Molding Process

The tooling is loaded into an injection molding press designed for LSR injection molding. This press is geared to control shot volume precisely, resulting in consistent liquid silicone rubber straws. LSR molding is similar to conventional injection molding, but there are significant differences. LSR is a two-part thermoset compound that solidifies into the final part after being cooled and injected into a heated mold. An automatic metering mixing pump is used to ensure a precise ratio of the two-part compound. Unlike thermoplastic resins, LSR cannot be melted again once solidified due to its permanent molded state.

Liquid silicone rubber is a thermoset that is easy to inject into molds and less prone to defects such as sinking than typical thermoplastics. However, LSR is extremely prone to flashing, even into gaps as small as 0.0002 inches. When designing LSR parts, it is important to follow best practices for standard plastic mold tooling. Although the materials are different, the molds are constructed in a similar way.
