Rubber straps are a familiar sight, but the smart silicone strap has emerged as a popular choice, often found in sports and diving watches. While resembling traditional rubber straps, it boasts unique characteristics. Silicone constitutes a diverse family, categorized into inorganic and organic forms.
Inorganic Silicone
Inorganic silicone is an active adsorbent created by reacting sodium silicate and sulfuric acid, followed by various treatments such as aging and acid foaming. Structurally, it resembles a sponge, featuring interconnected pores forming a capillary adsorption system with a substantial surface area. Primarily used as a desiccant, it can adsorb and condense water vapor equivalent to 40% of its weight.
Organic Silicone
Organic silicone refers to compounds containing a Si-C bond, often with an organic group directly bonded to a silicon atom. Polysiloxanes, the most extensively studied organic silicon compounds, account for over 90% of usage. Additionally, compounds linking organic groups to silicon atoms through oxygen, sulfur, or nitrogen are commonly referred to as organosilicon compounds.In daily usage, organic silicone finds application in silicone rubber, silicone, and silicone oil, comprising a specific branch within the synthetic rubber family. Silicone rubber used in watchbands falls under the room temperature vulcanized silicone rubber (RTV) category.
Silicone Rubber
Silicone rubber production involves silicon powder, methanol, and hydrochloric acid, undergoing a complex chemical process to obtain the final product. Often referred to as “liquid silica gel,” this form possesses a low molecular weight, remaining in a liquid state at room temperature. Mixing the cross-linking agent and platinum catalyst with the liquid silica gel, followed by injection into a mold and a vulcanization reaction, solidifies and shapes the material. Various additives provide silicone with distinct properties such as specific gravity, hardness, strength, color, and texture.
Compared to standard organic rubber, silicone rubber demonstrates superior resistance to high and low temperatures. It retains flexibility even in extreme conditions, maintaining its chemical structure within environments ranging from -°C to 300°C. Unlike traditional rubber, silicone rubber doesn’t freeze or become brittle in sunlight-deprived spaces, making it an ideal sealing material even in severe cold.
