Types of Silicone Injection Molding

Single-Shot Injection Molding

Single-shot injection molding uses a single type of silicone material. This is the most common silicone injection molding method, notable for its fast production speed, high precision, and excellent product quality. The simplicity of the single-material injection machines makes them easy to operate and maintain. However, this method is limited to products that do not require multiple colors or varying hardness levels.

Process of Single-Shot Injection Molding:

Material Preparation: Select and prepare the liquid silicone material, ensuring the correct formulation and proportioning.

Preheating: Control the injection molding machine’s barrel temperature below 25 degrees Celsius for smooth material flow.

Mold Preparation: Clean the mold and apply a mold release agent to facilitate easy demolding.

Silicone Injection: Inject the liquid silicone into a static mixer, then into the injection device, and finally into the heated mold.

Mold Filling: Apply appropriate pressure and speed to ensure complete filling of the mold cavity.

Curing: Allow the silicone to cure and harden inside the heated mold.

Demolding and Post-Processing: Remove the finished product from the mold and perform any necessary post-processing such as trimming and cleaning.

Single-shot injection molding is widely used for making seals, buttons, handles, and electronic components due to its efficiency and consistency in product quality.

Insert Injection Molding

Insert injection molding involves embedding materials such as metal or plastic into silicone products to enhance functionality or connectivity. This technique allows for the creation of silicone products with integrated components but generally takes longer and costs more than single-shot injection due to the additional materials involved.

Process of Insert Injection Molding:

Material Preparation: Prepare the liquid silicone and the materials or components to be embedded.

Mold Preparation: Clean the mold and apply mold release agent.

Silicone Injection: Partially fill the mold with liquid silicone.

Placement of Materials or Components: Position the materials or components to be embedded in the silicone.

Silicone Filling: Continue injecting silicone until the mold is completely filled.

Curing: Allow the silicone to cure and harden.

Demolding and Post-Processing: Remove the product from the mold and perform any necessary post-processing.

Insert molding is commonly used in electronics, medical devices, automotive parts, and consumer goods, providing greater design flexibility and functionality.

Two-Shot Injection Molding

Two-shot injection molding uses two different types of silicone materials to produce products with multiple colors or varying hardness levels. This method is characterized by its ability to create products with diverse physical properties and faster production speeds, although it requires specialized and more expensive injection machines.

Process of Two-Shot Injection Molding:

Material Preparation: Prepare two different liquid silicone materials and adjust their formulations as needed.

Preheating: Maintain a low temperature in the injection molding machine’s barrels.

Mold Preparation: Clean the molds and apply mold release agents.

Silicone Injection: Inject the two silicone materials into separate barrels, then into the mold through different nozzles.

Mold Filling: Ensure the materials are filled into designated areas of the mold with precise pressure and speed.

Curing: Allow the silicone to cure and harden in the mold.

Demolding and Post-Processing: Remove the product from the mold and perform post-processing.
